The Brompton seat sleeve allows the seatpost to slide up and down smoothly. Over time it can wear and will need to be replaced by a Brompton dealer
They will need a special reaming tool to do this
Note: This should be held in place with rubberised superglue

Easier to fit than you might think
The old one needs to be removed by breaking it inwards, as it is quite firmly glued in place. Clean up the old glue with a scraper of some kind and ensure the inside of the seat tube is clean and dry. Glue in the new insert with an adhesive that stays rubbery when dry. I used Unibond Repair Extreme. Ensure any excess glue is wiped away (you don't want to glue your seatpost in place!), fit the seatpost and leave it clamped up overnight to give the glue a really good chance to stick the sleeve to the frame. Brompton say the new sleeve needs reaming in situ, a factory job (imagine the hassle of that unless you live in west London) but mine is perfect - fingertip pressure to close the clamp, no slippage but the seat easily slides down under its own weight when unclamped.
