Brompton Main Frame and Handlebar Stem Hinge Tool

Please Note: Incorrect use could damage your Brompton frame - if in doubt use your local Brompton dealer 

This is a workshop tool used to replace the spindle from worn hinges, where play has developed on Brompton Bicycles, it is used on the following Brompton folding bikes:

  • A Line / B75
  • C Line
  • C Line Electric
  • P Line
  • P Line Electric

Paint damage may occur during this process 

If the hinge has play of more than 2mm then the spindle may need replacing

If the stem is frozen then it will need to be sprayed with anti-seize, if this does not work remove the spindle and replace with a spindle of the same diameter, tools needed: 

  • A 1/4 inch drill bit 
  • Power drill 
  • Hammer 
  • 5mm drill 
  • 10mm Allen key
  • 6, 6.1 or 6.35mm reamer

Note the handle bar spindle is shorter than the mainframe spindle 

The process to replace the spindle on the handlebar is as follows:

  • Drill out the pin from the non-splined end
  • drill to a maximum depth of no more than 4mm 
  • Using a 1/4 inch drill bit 
  • Drive out the pin from the same side using This tool - a Brompton Main Frame and Handlebar Stem Hinge Tool
  • Keep the hinge aligned straight and protect the other side with a cloth while you extract the spindle 
  • Note when the spindle is removed the handlebar is no longer attached to the bike - secure it 
  • Apply cutting compound to the reaming tool 
  • Use the reaming tool to ream out the bore
  • Ensure you ream both halves of the hinge 
  • Clean the swaff from the reamer 
  • Grease the spindle from the non-splined end 
  • Lightly tighten the hinge clamp to keep the handle bar hinge together 
  • insert the spindle from the opposite side from removal 
  • Tap the spindle though until there is 2mm still showing 
  • Test the hinge to make sure it moves freely without any play 
  • If there is play re-do the job with a thicker spindle 
  • Invert the tool and use the alignment section of the tool to compress the spindle, yuo may hear an audible click during this process  

Please note this is one of the harder tools to use on a Brompton, if you are uncertain please refer to your local Brompton dealer
