Brompton 44T spider chain ring / guard

Reduce the gearing (make going up hill easier) by changing from a 50T (standard on 3 or 6 speed) or changing from a 54T (standard on a 2 speed) to this 44T!

The Brompton "Spider" crankset was introduced on new Brompton bicycles at the beginning of 2013

This is a replacement 44 tooth chain ring complete with chain guard

One of our most popular upgrades - allows a Brompton with 50T c chain ring (standard gearing) and spider crankset to be changed to reduced gearing - making going up hills easier

It can be used to replace the 44,  50 or 54 teeth chain rings on the "spider" crankset introduced in 2013.

A standard 3 or 6 speed Brompton comes with a 50 tooth front chain ring - changing to 44 teeth will reduce the gearing by approx 14%

    Well worth it for hilly regions

    I changed my 50 tooth for this 44 tooth chain ring and found the hills (finally) were not so difficult. Tip: There is the Park Tool Chain Ring Nut Wrench CNW-2 which helped me torque the bolts properly. Without this tool I couldn't torque things properly.

        Good conversion for extra low gears

        As other reviewers, a doddle to fit. As the chain ring nuts weren't seized didn't need a chain ring nut spanner. The two redundant links easily removed with a chain link extractor.
        Still enough high gearing on the 6 speed Brompton for me (you need to be going some to spin out) and makes the climbs more achievable.

        Good for the old knees!

        If your knees are getting on a bit then you will be wanting one of these! Takes about 5 minutes to change over. Makes hills a good deal easier. Do yourself a favour and buy the matching chain to save having to shorten your existing chain by 2 links.

        Designed for Cumbria

        As someone riding a Brompton out of it's natural city habitat, the 44T chainring has made it easier to say in the saddle on many a Cumbrian climb.

        Shortly going for a ride over some alpine passes where I'm sure this will come in handy too.

        Great service from Brilliant Bikes and simple to fit and shorten chain if you have a few basic tools.
