When your Brompton bike is folded, this hook hooks the front fork to the rear frame to stop it unfolding when you pick it up. (in combination with the seatpost being in the down position)
One of the "essential" Brompton spare parts - without this your Brompton won't stay folded properly
It works in conjunction with the lower stop disk and seat post (when the seat post is not in the down position the fold is not locked and picking up the bike will cause it to unfold)
Unfortunately over time (being exposed to UV light and the weather) the plastic part can become brittle making it more susceptible to breaking. (Though not that much as we only sold 85 in 2016!)
Tools required: 3mm allen key / hex wrench
Brompton Q part code: QHOOKA
Brompton part number: 9017188
Good stuff
Came in good order. Better to use a drill with an Allen tip than to use handheld Allen key for the bolt to avoid cold melt.
Typical brompton low quality part
First up let me say brilliantbikes are awesome, their service is second to none as is their prices.
Secondly the hook I purchased is a typical low grade genuine brompton part. These things crumble when they have been out in UV (sunlight) after a while so expect to replace these regularly, I use my bike all day 5-6 days a week. Please note this is not a reflection on Brilliantbikes.co.uk as they can only sell what Brompton make. I thknk its about time someone re-engineered these to have some sort of life in them.
The genuine Brompton article
If you happen like me to cycle between old-style iron hoops at the entrance to a park cycleway, you may catch your nylon hook on one of the hoops. The result is that the bike will no longer stay folded. This is the item you need! Read the supplied instructions and you will be able to refold the bike as before. Problem completely solved.
Brompton hook.
I had to reduce the length of the screw as it was very tight and I was afraid of cracking the hook itself. Price and delivery first class.
Brompton front axle nylon hook
I found this really hard to fit. The instructions say it is 'self tapping' so may be quite stiff. Not eing the strongest of souls I used a clamp to hold the hook and turned the screw with an Allen key, as tight as I could. It was no-where near deep enough into the hook when the Allen key broke - so off to the local garage man. He managed to unscrew my hard work to date, this time with some big car-mending tools. He used a tapper which helped quite a bit. However the hook remains loose as neither of us could tap the screw in as far as would be needed to get it to fit tightly, despite resorting to the trick of using 2 washers.
Other customers may be stringer, but it would be good to cater for the weaker end of the spectrum.
