Brompton Seat post Sleeve Tool Kit - no glue

Workshop only Tool for use in services and repairs, if you are not confident in using this please see a Brompton dealer

This Seat Post Sleeve Tool Kit is used to replace worn Brompton seat post sleeves. These wear over time due to the frequent adjustment of the saddle's height during the folding process. Please note that you need extra Tools to do this on the T Line.

The kit contains the following:

  • 1x Reamer,
  • 1 x Guide
  • 1x Mandrill

Note - this does not include the glue needed to fix the new seat sleeve insert in place

The most common sign that your seat sleeve insert needs replacing is that the saddle keeps lowering

All bikes after 2002 the seat sleeve insert has a key in it, before 2002 no key. The key slots into the hole in the frame (seat tube cut out) - recommendation is to test before gluing in place.

Tools needed:

  • 10mm Spanner
  • Gloves
  • Loctite 480 or equivalent
  • 4mm Allen key / hex wrench
  • Possi drive screwdriver
  • Crank extractor
  • Steel pipe cleaning brush
  • Seat Sleeve reaming tool
  • 8mm Allen Key / hex wrench
  • 8mm Torque Wrench
  • Telescopic seat sleeve
  • Mandrill tool
  • Old Brompton seat post
  • Head set spanner - needed if re-shaping seat clamp area
  • 17mm Spanner - needed if re-shaping seat clamp area

Procedure:

  • Remove the saddle, and seat post
  • Remove the drive side crank
  • Remove the old seat sleeve by inverting an old seat post and use the flared end to push the seat sleeve out
  • Ensure that all of the seat sleeve is removed and clean using an aerosol degreaser
  • The arms should be parallel - reshape if needed
  • The tabs should be slightly flared - if needed re-shape with a 17mm spanner
  • Apply grease to the outside of the seat post to protect from glue
  • Apply the glue - lock tight 480 or equivalent to the new seat sleeve insert - only apply to the raised surfaces - insert the seat sleeve making sure the slots and the key are lined up, if using the newer keyed version you will hear a click when it is in place
  • The seat sleeve should be behind flush with the frame, use a spanner to check the seat sleeve is properly aligned with the frame
  • Insert the Mandrill tool and lightly tighten the seat clamp to snare that the frame is not misshaped
  • Allow the glue to dry for a minimum of 30 minutes (overnight is better!)
  • Invert the bike and insert the reaming tool from the underside of the bike
  • Making sure the telescopic seat sleeve is fitted - this helps the tool go straight
  • Gently lower the tool while turning
  • Once the tool has entered to frame to the flat edge of the tool, remove by turning clockwise
  • Clean the swaff
  • Assemble the seat clamp
  • Replace the crank arm
  • Re-fit the seat clamp and check it runs freely
  • Re-fit the Pentaclip and saddle.
  • Go and ride:)
